The Platforms – a Broad Basis for Sound Knowledge

SCNAT’s platforms

• attract the best scientific minds to work on its behalf
• are financed through service agreements with SCNAT
• organize SCNAT’s basic tasks autonomously
• fulfil the core tasks in their field on behalf of SCNAT and the Swiss Academies

SCNAT has three platform types, based on:

• scientific disciplines
• regionally-based nature research associations
• societally-relevant issues

The general mandates of the three platform types sum up their main long-term main tasks which can be categorized in accordance with the legislation on research. These mandates also form the basis for the decision to appoint or cancel a platform by SCNAT’s Delegate Assembly. Special mandates are formulated in the context of the individual service agreements and are generally limited to a multi-year planning basis (four years).

Each platform is responsible for the implementation of a wide range of tasks on behalf of SCNAT. They consists of:

• A presidium of scientific experts
• Full-time financially-supported offices
