831 key experts selected for the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report

Over 50% more nominations, among them more women and authors from developing countries

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) just announced the release of the final list of Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Review Editors. This team of 831 experts will coordinate the assessment of the forthcoming IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). The three volumes will be published between 2013 and 2014.

In the selection of leading authors the IPCC office payed particular attention to cover all relevant fields with a range of scientific views on climate change. The 831 individuals are drawn from fields including meteorology, physics, oceanography, statistics, engineering, ecology, social sciences and economics. In selecting the leading author teams the IPCC stressed the need for regional and gender balance and recognized the importance of involving new and younger authors.

Among the selected experts are 15 Swiss experts. The full list of coordinating or leading authors for the three working groups and the details of the selection process can found on the IPCC home page.

During the assessment process additional experts will join the teams as regular 'Authors'. They will bring in specific competences.
